Immersion

Training and development also consists of opportunites for experiences, retreats, and time to spend with community. Previous opportunities have included the White Violet Center for Eco-Justice in Indiana to learn more about sustainable living, a visit to the United Nations in New York to experience global peacemaking, or a weekend demonstrating at the School of the Americas (WHINSEC) at Fort Benning, Georgia-- the training and development program aims to help the Workers grow in awareness of their role as global citizens.

The Experience

St. Joseph Workers at the Welcoming CeremonyThe St. Joseph Worker Program has a strong commitment to the development of the Workers. Each Worker is placed (by mutual interview and agreement) in a community/ministry placement doing direct service and justice work. The placement is 36 hours per week with excellent supervision, support and room for creativity. The remaining 4 hours a week are focused on having time for training, educational opportunities, community time, spiritual growth, activism, and learning community organizing skills. One particular skill involves 1 to 1's,  a community organizing based skill that assists each worker to make strong connections at and through their work/ministry placements and with leaders and other mentors in the CSJ and local civic communities. This public relationship building with local, state, and national leaders and organizations is invaluable for the Workers and makes it possible for real change to happen.
